GE/AEG Contactors (Schütze) – History, Discontinuation and Availability

GE/AEG Contactors: From GE Industrial Solutions to ABB

GE/AEG contactors, commonly known as GE/AEG Schütze, have been used in industrial electrical installations and control systems for many years. These products were originally manufactured and distributed by GE Industrial Solutions, a business specialising in electrical distribution and industrial solutions.

GE Industrial Solutions offered a range of electrical components, including contactors, switching devices and other industrial electrical equipment. GE and AEG contactors became established products in various industrial applications.

However, the ownership and product portfolio of GE Industrial Solutions have changed significantly over the years.

ABB Acquired GE Industrial Solutions in 2018

On 30 June 2018, ABB completed its acquisition of GE Industrial Solutions. The acquisition was officially announced by ABB on 2 July 2018.

With this acquisition, GE Industrial Solutions became part of ABB's Electrification business. The transaction brought together the product portfolios and expertise of both companies.

Following the acquisition, ABB took over responsibility for the former GE Industrial Solutions product portfolio.

Discontinued GE/AEG Contactors – What Has Changed?

Since the acquisition, ABB has reviewed and developed the product portfolio inherited from GE Industrial Solutions.

As a result, many former GE and AEG products, including various contactors (Schütze), have been discontinued by ABB.

Furthermore, the GE brand is no longer used for many of these products in the current product offering.

This means that customers looking for specific GE/AEG contactors may encounter difficulties when trying to source original products through conventional distribution channels.

For companies operating existing machinery, industrial installations or control cabinets, finding suitable contactors can therefore be particularly important.

The discontinuation of individual products does not necessarily mean that compatible alternatives are unavailable. Depending on the application and technical specifications, alternative products may be worth considering.

GE/AEG Schütze for Industrial Applications

Contactors are essential switching components in many industrial electrical systems. They are commonly used for switching electric motors, heating systems, lighting circuits and other electrical loads.

When replacing or sourcing a GE/AEG contactor, it is important to check the relevant technical specifications, including:

• Rated operational current.

• Rated operational voltage.

• Coil voltage and frequency.

• Number of main contacts and auxiliary contacts.

• Utilisation category, such as AC-3.

• Mounting dimensions and connection arrangements.

Always verify the technical compatibility of a replacement contactor before installation.
